The city of Concarneau is comprised of two distinctly different sections. The modern area of the town is situated on the mainland, while the medieval Ville Close, rests on an island in the center of the harbor. This lovely excursion focuses on the well-preserved, walled old town of Concarneau.

Though small, this fortification was the cradle of Concarneau's early history and was recognized in the writings of French author Gustave Flaubert who wrote, "...a wall whose base is battered by waves at high tide...Machicolation is still intact, exactly as it was in Queen Anne' s day..." The town was also the setting for the 1931 novel "Le chien Jaune (The Yellow Dog), by noted Belgian author Georges Simenon.

A short transfer brings you the walled old town, where upon arrival, you will enjoy a guided walking tour that highlights many of the interesting and historical sites of "Ville Close." As you stroll along the ancient streets, you will soon see for yourself why this exquisite section of the city is one of the most photographed in Brittany.

Following a 1-hour guided walking tour, you will have the opportunity to further explore on your own before it's time to transfer back to the pier where your tour concludes.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 1-hour of moderate walking, plus any additional walking at the guests' discretion during free time. Much of the walking is over cobblestone and uneven surfaces. There are also a few steps to negotiate. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and not considered suitable for those with mobility concerns. Weather appropriate clothing; flat, comfortable walking shoes, a hat and sunglasses are recommended. In the event of religious ceremonies taking place, interior visits to any cathedrals will not be possible.
