Boarding your coach at the pier, you will depart on a brief 30-minute drive to Bruges (or Brugge in Flemish), an exquisitely preserved medieval city. This veritable jewel of a town beribboned with picturesque canals, came into its own in the Middle Ages as a port and became the chief market for the great Hanseatic League of mercantile cities. Being an important banking center as well, the town attracted such illustrious artists as Jan Van Eyck, Hans Memling and Gerard David, who no doubt enjoyed the patronage of its wealthy bourgeois. The general prosperity, visible in the opulence of the mansions and civic buildings, lasted until the end of the 15th century.
Upon arriving at Bruges, you will embark on a guided walking tour. As your guide leads you through the narrow, cobbled streets, you will truly feel that you have stepped back in time. Often called Die Scone or "the beautiful", the charm of this medieval city will captivate you immediately. Enjoy picturesque scenes of ancient buildings, tree-lined canals and gabled facades as you make your way through the heart of the historical city center.
Included in your tour is a delightful 30-minute canal cruise. Sit back and relax in your small boat as you are treated to the scenic and serene waterways of this enchanting city. Following your canal tour, you'll continue with your guided city walk, seeing such sites as the bustling Burg Square, Belfry Tower, gothic Town Hall and the Chapel of the Holy Blood.
Leaving the church, there will be a short walk to Walplein where you will be afforded approximately 2 1/2 hours of free time to explore the shops and have lunch on your own. As Bruges is full of lace and chocolate shops, you'll have the opportunity to search for the perfect souvenir.
Rejoining your guide in the afternoon, you will walk by the romantic Lake of Love as you travel back to your coach for the return trip to the pier.
Please note: This tour includes approximately 2 1/2 hours of walking, at times over uneven ground, plus any additional walking at the guests' discretion during free time and is not considered suitable for wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Order of sights visited may vary and the itinerary may be reversed. Dress conservatively to enter cathedral.
