Create your own personal perfume at the Fragonard perfumery in Grasse and then tour beautiful Saint-Paul-de-Vence, a medieval village that has long inspired artists.
Depart from the pier and drive inland to Grasse, one of the most striking medieval towns in France. Because of the area’s abundant sunshine and ideal microclimate for growing fragrant flowers such as jasmine and violets, the perfume industry has thrived in Grasse for centuries.
Following a guided tour of the Fragonard perfumery, which dates back to 1782, you will have the rare opportunity to create your own perfume. Combine whatever essences you desire to make a scent that reflects your personal tastes. Of course, the perfume is yours to take home, along with whatever you may purchase in the perfumery’s boutique.
Continuing on, you will drive east through the mountains to Saint-Paul-de-Vence, another village revered for its medieval character. Upon arrival, you will enter through the main gate and commence a guided walking tour down the winding pedestrian-only streets of Saint-Paul-de-Vence. Your route will take you past lovely churches, shaded squares and fortified towers. You may even see the French game of pétanque or lawn bowling being played beneath a plane tree. The setting has long inspired artists, especially in the 1920s when Signac, Modigliani and Bonnard painted here.
As there is plenty to see elsewhere, you will then enjoy more than two hours to explore further and enjoy lunch on your own. The Great Fountain Square is an excellent starting point, from which you can easily reach the grand Collegiate Church, whose construction stretched from the 14th to 18th centuries. Afterwards, you will rejoin your coach and travel back to the ship.
Please note: This tour includes approximately 3 1/2 hours of guided, moderate to strenuous walking/standing, plus any additional walking at the guests’ discretion during free time. There are some steps, cobblestone surfaces and uphill gradients to negotiate. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and not considered suitable for those guests with mobility concerns. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; a bottle of water from the ship; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The tour sequence may vary.
