While it takes but an hour or so to reach Lucca, upon arriving you may feel that you have traveled back in time. An old fortified wall surrounds the city, lending it a delightful medieval look and feel. Walk along the ancient bastions, and you can almost imagine yourself back in the 1500s, defending the city against invaders. Even older is the 12th century Basilica of San Frediano, your next stop, which features a large mosaic on it façade. Continuing your trip into Lucca's historic past, you will see the site of a Roman amphitheater, its outline still preserved, and the exquisite Cathedral of Santa Martino, surely the most significant religious monument in Lucca. It contains several exquisite paintings by Tintoretto and Ghirlandaio. After the guided portion of your walking tour, you will have free time to browse and perhaps shop for local handicrafts.
Please note: This tour includes considerable walking and is not considered suitable for wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
