A drive through the countryside surrounding Dubrovnik reveals a traditional side of Croatian life that is quite enchanting. As you tour the village of Cavtat, which was once a prosperous Greek and Roman colony, you'll notice a proud reverence for the old methods, whether it involves fishing or making handicrafts. You can almost feel time slow down as you wander the seaside promenade and quiet streets on your own.
Returning to the walled city of Dubrovnik, history is still prominent as you explore the heart of this medieval stronghold. Your walking tour here begins at the landmark Pile Gate, the main entrance to the old city and the beginning of its famous main street, the Stradun.
Along the way we visit the Franciscan Monastery, which houses the oldest still working pharmacy in Europe, opened 1317. Numerous works of art and old equipment from the pharmacy are also on display. In addition, will we visit the Dominican Monastery with its finest collection of Renaissance paintings in Dubrovnik. Among many local and Italian masters, the highlight is a painting by Tizian.
After the walking tour of Dubrovnik, enjoy free time to browse the shops and further explore the old town at your own pace.
Please note: Guests are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes for this tour which involves moderate walking and 15 steps to climb.
