Explore the marvelous Monastery of Montserrat, situated high on a craggy, sacred mountain that offers up simply breathtaking views.
From the pier, it's a drive through some of Spain's most amazing countryside, highlighted by mountains of unique rock formations. After approximately ninety minutes, you'll arrive at the monastery, which rests between oddly shaped pillars of stone. As an introduction, upon arrival you will watch a film depicting a typical day in the monks' lives, and then sample some of Montserrat's traditional food and liqueur. In the monastery's museum, there's an invaluable collection of religious and secular art and a collection of paintings by modern masters, including Monet, Manet and Picasso. Inside the ornate basilica, you will hear the glorious voices of the renowned La Salve Choir, Europe's oldest boy choir. The monastery's highlight however, is surely the revered wooden statue of the Virgin, which has attracted pilgrims since the 12th century.
Afterwards, enjoy free time for lunch on your own, a bit of shopping, or simply meander through the peaceful grounds before it's time to return to the pier in Barcelona.
Please note: A performance by La Salve Choir is not guaranteed.
