PRE - SPAIN'S CAPITALS

PRE - SPAIN'S CAPITALS

Embrace the opportunity to explore two of Europe's most vibrant cities. In the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona, buildings date from medieval times, while the modern architect Gaudí has left a contemporary impression across the city's architectural landscape. In Madrid, visit the Royal Palace and the Puerta del Sol, the heart of the city. Take in the vast collection of the Prado Museum, one of the most important art galleries in the world. Meander the famous streets and plazas of Madrid as you build up an appetite for Spanish tapas and an authentic flamenco performance.

Note: This program begins in Madrid therefore incoming flights must be booked into Madrid Airport.

Day 1

Meet your English-speaking guide at the Madrid Airport for the transfer to your hotel, the Tryp Madrid Ambassador or similar. Located in the historic heart of Madrid, the elegant hotel is close to landmarks such as the Royal Palace, Almudena Cathedral, Theatre de la Opera and the Senate. In fact, the hotel is a landmark itself, as it was built within the 19th-century palace of the Dukes of Granada de Ega.

After settling in, you may wish to explore on your own, especially the attractions within easy walking distance such as the Royal Palace. Although it hasn't been a royal residence since 1931, the palace is historically important and often used for state business. It's the largest palace in Western Europe.

In the evening, enjoy dinner at the hotel.

Day 2

After breakfast, your English-speaking guide will meet you for a half-day city tour that begins with an exploration of the revered Prado Museum. Inside the 18th-century neoclassical building, some of the world's most acclaimed and famed art is displayed. Masterpieces from Spain's Velázquez and Goya, Italy's Raphael, and Germany's Dürer are always on exhibit, including thousands of other key works.

Afterwards, enjoy a panoramic drive through Madrid, Spain's capital since 1562. Located atop a plateau, Madrid has the distinction of being Europe's highest capital. You will gain great insight into the lifestyle as you drive along the city streets such as Gran Via, which is lined with early 20th-century architecture. Attractions along the way include the Parliament House and Puerta del Sol, Madrid's historical and geographical heart, a plaza named for the city's 15th-century eastern gate, where the rising sun bathed the city in light.

Madrid also shines at night, as you will discover at Las Carboneras (or a similar venue), where you will be treated to an authentic tapas dinner, accompanied by a passionate Flamenco performance. (Please note that Flamenco venue is not exclusive). Afterwards, you will transfer back to the hotel for the evening.

Day 3

After breakfast, you will check out of the hotel and drive to Atocha, Madrid's first and largest train station. Here, you will board the AVE high-speed train for a picturesque, 3.5-hour journey to Barcelona. Your guide will be waiting to accompany you to the elegant Hotel NH Calderón in the center of the city.

At the hotel, you will receive a ticket for the Barcelona Hop on, Hop off Tourist Bus and a map noting the city's must-see attractions. The ticket is valid for 24 hours.

You will have the remainder of the day to explore Barcelona on your own, and there is plenty to see and do. You might wander about the narrow streets of the Gothic Quarter, behold famed architect Antoni Gaudi's unfinished and controversial Church of the Holy Family, and stroll tree-lined La Ramblas, a long, wide avenue lined with extraordinary shops and restaurants. For a spectacular view of Barcelona, take the funicular to the Tibidabo hilltop and ride the glass elevator to the observation tower's top.

Day 4

After breakfast you will check out of the hotel (by 12nn) and you will be transferred to Barcelona port to embark your cruise in the afternoon. Enjoy some leisure time in the city before your transfer. Luggage will be stored at the hotel until your transfer.

POST - SACRED TREASURES-GREECE

POST - SACRED TREASURES-GREECE

Don't miss this unique opportunity to experience some of the most sacred sites in pristine Greece. After a scenic drive, you will find yourself in Delphi, the shrine of Apollo and considered by the ancients to be the physical and spiritual center of the earth. Visit the Meteora, one of the largest and most important monastery complexes in Greece. Built on sandstone rock pillars, the six monasteries appear to be suspended in the air. Explore the new Acropolis Museum in Athens, built to house the more than 4,000 artifacts found on the site of the Acropolis.

PLEASE NOTE: This is an extensive 2 day program that covers a lot of ground by luxury coach, there is a lot of driving involved but guests will have this unique opportunity to visit two of the most precious and sacred sites which lie in the most beautiful and unspoiled parts of Northern Greece.

Day 1

Upon disembarkation from your cruise ship board your coach for the scenic drive to Delphi. Delphi was considered by the ancients to be the physical and spiritual centers of the earth. This shrine of Apollo, set nearly 2.000 feet up on the slopes of Mount Parnassus. Here was the most respected oracle of antiquity. Even the most intelligent men, who lived during the brilliant civilization of Athens, believed implicitly in the responses of the god. These were given by the inspired priestess, the Pythia, and were interpreted, usually with an ambiguous touch, by the priests. Delphi grew fabulously rich with offerings, and though they have almost all disappeared now, you can admire the ruins and try to picture it as it was during its 1.000 prestigious years.

Walk up the Sacred Way past the beautiful small Treasuries to the Temple of Apollo, location of the oracle; continue to the Museum with its superb collection of votive offerings and statues, including the world famous Charioteer.

Following your visit to the site enjoy a traditional country lunch which will be served at the picturesque village of Arachova.

After lunch sit back and relax and take in the scenery of your drive to Kalambaka. Kalamaba is the picturesque town that sits at the foot of Meteora. After check-in your dinner will be served at the hotel and the evening will be at your leisure.

DAY 2

Once breakfast is completed you will board your coach for the visit of the Meteora Monasteries, admire the extraordinary rocks of Meteora which were formed as a result of the force of the nature and they appear to be suspended in the sky, crested with the celebrated monasteries. Today only six monasteries are inhabited, two of which have become nunneries. You are invited to delve into two of these remarkable phenomena, seemingly floating in the sky and serving as an example of the post-Byzantine era. Please be respectful of the dress code in the monasteries and nunneries, no shorts are permitted and ladies are required to wear long skirts, some are available on site.

After the visit of the Monasteries you will commence your drive to Athens, a lunch stop will be made along the way. Arriving in Athens you will proceed directly to the hotel to check-in and a quick rest before your visit of the New Acropolis Museum.

The impressive building was completed and opened in 2009 and has an exhibition space of more than 14,000 square meters. Thanks to its particular architecture and the huge window fronts, you will get the impression to cross the ancient settlements on the slopes of the Acropolis. After your visit you will proceed to the historical center of Athens for your dinner.
