Departing the pier by air-conditioned motor coach, proceed for one-and-a-half hours to Rome's historical center. Enjoy a panoramic drive by the ruins of Caracalla's Baths, the Capitol, Piazza Venezia and the Colosseum on your way to the Jewish Quarter.

As you begin walking through the Jewish Quarter, your guide will provide a fascinating history of the area. The Via Portico d'Ottavia (Octavia's Porch street) was initially built in 146 BCE and is still the center of Jewish life in Rome. The street has evolved through the years into a lively hodgepodge of ancient, medieval and Renaissance architecture.

You will also see the Jewish Ghetto, where in 1555 the anti-Semitic Pope Paul IV decreed that Jews must live. The smallest district of Rome, the ghetto was isolated for more than three centuries behind large walls, which were finally destroyed during the reunification of Italy in 1870.

Your next visit will be the main synagogue or Il Tempio (The Temple), which was designed by architects Armanni and Costa in 1904. Enjoy a guided visit of the synagogue as well as a visit to the Museo d'Arte Ebraica, a small museum detailing Roman Jewish life and ritual.

A typical Roman lunch with wine will be served at a local restaurant in the Jewish area.

Following lunch, re-board you motor coach and drive along the Tiber River to Viale Washington for independent time. Here, you may shop, explore on your own or enjoy time in a local café.

After your independent exploration of the baroque area of the Eternal City, re-board your motor coach and drive pass St. Peter's Basilica, the largest church in the world, as you return to ship.

Please note: As this excursion involves a substantial amount of walking, it is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties. Guests should dress conservatively for the visit to the Synagogue. Male visitors must wear long pants and will be given a paper hat to cover their head. Ladies must cover their knees and shoulders. Guests also should wear flat, comfortable shoes. Be aware that there is an approximately three-hour, round-trip drive to Rome. However, the fascinating sights included in this excursion more than compensate for the length of the journey. The visit to the Synagogue may be delayed, shortened or eliminated due to services, ceremonies or security reasons at any time. The order of sights visited may vary.
