Explore the icons in and around spectacular San Francisco, enjoying tastings in Napa and Sonoma Valley’s famed wine country, shopping in lovely Sausalito, and a tour of the notorious prison on Alcatraz.
After flying into San Francisco, you will be met and transferred to the Fairmont San Francisco. Centrally located, this luxury hotel is a short cable car trip from the bustling Downtown, Financial District, Union Square and Fisherman's Wharf. In fact, The Fairmont San Francisco hotel is the only spot in San Francisco where each of the city’s cable car lines meet. The remainder of the day is at leisure with meals on your own.
Following breakfast in the hotel, you will board an air-conditioned motor coach for an approximate 30-minute narrated scenic drive past Pier 39, through lively Fisherman's Wharf, along the Marina District, by the Palace of Fine Arts and the Presidio, and across the Golden Gate Bridge en route to Sonoma, where the rich soils gave birth to California’s wine industry.
Sonoma is the closest wine region to San Francisco, just 45 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge. You will start your wine tour at Cline Cellars, nestled in the southern foothills of the Sonoma Valley. In the latter part of the 1800s, this area was a booming farming community with thousands of acres of orchards and healthy vineyards. Fred Cline’s maternal grandfather, Valeriano Jacuzzi of spa fame, called this place home.
On summer visits to his grandparents, Fred learned to love the agricultural life and how to vinify grapes into wine. In 1982, with an inheritance from his grandfather, Fred founded Cline Cellars near Oakley, California. Here, he preserved and restored many ancient vine sites to reign as premier California wine lands.
After approximately one hour at the vineyard, you will board the coach for a short stop in Sonoma’s historic town plaza, which offers a shady park surrounded by charming boutiques, superb cuisine, landmark buildings, and fabulous restaurants. Enjoy approximately 60 minutes of free time to browse the shops and enjoy lunch at leisure and on your own.
Next, you will travel to Napa Valley's Carneros wine region where you will stop at the Domaine Carmeros.
This premium wine growing region enjoys the cooling influence of the Pacific Ocean and summer fog, making it an ideal growing area for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Domaine Carneros is the California expression of the tradition and excellence of its founder, Champagne Taittinger. Established in 1987, Domaine Carneros is considered a regional landmark with exquisite views of endless vineyard-covered hills.
On this very unique tasting tour, you will be guided through the process of creating fine sparkling wines in the traditional method while sampling a variety of Domaine Carneros wines along the way. Your experienced wine educator will also present Domaine Carneros still wine production and you will enjoy a taste of the delicate and seductive Pinot Noir.
You will spend over an hour here before returning to San Francisco via the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.
Important Additional Information: Wheelchairs need to be standard size and collapsible; no electric wheelchairs/scooters are permitted. Guests must be ambulatory and able to board and disembark the motor coach on their own. Guests should dress warmly, in layers and carry rain gear. Guests are encouraged to bring currency and credit cards to purchase extras such as souvenirs or food and beverage options.
Following breakfast at the hotel, you will board a motor coach for an approximate 30-minute journey across the Golden Gate Bridge, which is often shrouded in fog. After a stop at Vista Point for a fabulous view of the “City by the Bay,” you will continue on into nearby Sausalito Village.
After about 90 minute free time exploring the shops and galleries of Sausalito, you will drive across the Golden Gate Bridge and to the Alcatraz ferry docks, enjoying a panoramic view of the famous San Francisco skyline along the way.
While touring Alcatraz, known as “The Rock,” you will see the small jail cells and discover all sorts of fascinating facts about the notorious prison that once housed the likes of Al Capone and the Birdman of Alcatraz. Afterwards, you will return to the mainland and on to pier 39. From there, it is a short walk to embark the ship, where your luggage will be awaiting you.
Important Additional Information - Wheelchairs (collapsible or electric) are not permitted at Alcatraz. Tour operators will deny participation to guests arriving in wheelchairs or electric scooters.
