A Rotorua Maori Experience & Thermal Reserve

Tour Code: TAU-001
Tour Length: Half-Day (Approximately 8 3/4 hours)
Tour Effort: Moderate

Explore a thriving center of breathtaking thermal activity and traditional Maori culture during this scenic, full-day visit to the historic spa town of Rotorua.

Depart the pier for the drive south from the early-1900s town of Tauranga to Te Puke, the world's largest kiwifruit growing region. Upon arrival in Rotorua, a visit will be made to the Agrodome to watch the country's best-trained champion rams parade on stage, and a sheep-shearing demonstration. The highly-trained sheep dogs will finish the show with a display of sheep mustering.

Drive past the Rotorua lakefront where you may see a variety of waterfowl, including ducks and graceful black swans as well as several local landmarks before arriving . the Skyline Gondola terminal. Here, you’ll embark one of the aerial gondolas for an awesome ride up the side of Mount Ngongotaha, enjoying panoramic vistas of Lake Rotorua, the city and surrounding areas. Arriving at the top of the mountain, the Skyline Restaurant with its unparalleled views is where you’ll be treated to a delicious buffet lunch. During lunch, a local Maori “Kapa Haka” group will entertain you by performing many traditional action songs, including the “haka,” a fierce, challenging dance which is accompanied by a chant.

After lunch visit Te Puia, the home to the internationally renowned spouting Pohutu geyser and boasts silica terraces, pools of boiling mud and dramatic steams vents but best of all, your guide is a Maori who is keen to share the fascinating local lore and legends of this wonderful country. You will then view the reserve's fascinating re-creation of an early Maori village, and also have time to purchase souvenirs in the gift shop, including traditional Maori carvings.

At Te Puia's Maori Arts & Crafts Institute, where for the past 45 years, visitors have enjoyed this unique journey into the Maori's rich heritage. Their mission is all about preserving the ancient skills and rich culture of the Maori, and to that end, young people from across New Zealand are selected as apprentices. Here, the students learn skills ranging from carving to weaving, along with creating flax skirts and patterned bodices, and you will see all this at close hand. A strong sulfur smell, a product of the intense thermal activity, will fill the air. Remember to bring your cameras on this exciting geothermal experience.

Following your tour, you will re-board your coach for the 1.5-hour return drive to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves approximately 3 hours of total driving time. The order of sites visited may vary.

Culinary Discovery Tour - Maori "kai" Cooking Demo & Kiwi Fruit

Tour Code: TAU-1CT
Tour Length: Full-Day (Approximately 6 1/2 hours)
Tour Effort: Moderate

Accompanied by our Bon Appétit Culinary Center Chef, you'll tour a flourishing kiwi orchard, while enjoying its fruit in various products, and then visit a bubbling geothermal pool, in which your traditional lunch will be cooked Maori-style.

Depart from the pier and drive south following the Bay of Plenty a unique pocket of land where kiwifruit, the world's healthiest fruit, grows better than anywhere else on earth. Your destination is Kiwi 360, a horticulture theme park that revolves around the kiwi fruit. Although kiwi is synonymous with New Zealand, the fruit is indigenous to China. In 1904, the first seeds were imported; spurring the growth of what has become a major commercial enterprise. While touring Kiwi 360, you'll learn all about this vitamin-rich, high-fiber fruit, which is exported to more than 60 countries worldwide. Nearly 90% of New Zealand's crop grows in this part of the country, and the versatile fruit is used in everything from beauty products to beverages to condiments. Before leaving, you'll be treated to a morning tea which features chilled kiwi juice, freshly baked scones with kiwi jam and fresh whipped cream with slices of green and gold kiwifruit. You'll also have a chance to browse the onsite souvenir shop.

Rejoining your coach, you'll travel inland past the many lakes of Rotorua to Whakarewarewa, a geothermal valley created more than 40,000 years ago. Filled with hot springs, bubbling pools and gushing geysers, this wild landscape has been inhabited by the Maori since the early 14th century. Interestingly, the heat from these natural hot springs has long been used for cooking "kai," the Maori word for food.

Upon arrival, you'll join your local guide for a walk through the valley down into a private area that overlooks your own hot pool. Maori have been using the hot geothermal water for cooking for over 650 years. Your lunch will be prepared in the traditional way by placing it in a woven bag which is then lowered into the pool where it will cook naturally in the hot water. As your food cooks, you will watch as the chef prepares tasty dips that will include traditional Maori native herb alternatives. Later, as you dine on your tasty lunch, your guide will explain the history of Maori occupation in the region, bringing alive Maori stories and tales while interweaving the importance that location played on the choice and availability of food to the indigenous people.

Following your meal, you'll re-board your coach for the leisurely ninety minute drive back to the pier in Tauranga.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 2 hours of moderate walking/standing. There will be some steps at Kiwi 360 and a 1/2 mile of pathways at Whakarewarewa to negotiate. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and not considered suitable for those with mobility concerns. Weather appropriate clothing that should include a light water-proof jacket; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Guests must be at least 18 years of age in order to be served any alcoholic beverages.

Highlights of Tauranga & Maori Culture

Tour Code: TAU-002
Tour Length: Half-Day (Approximately 4 hours)
Tour Effort: Easy

Leaving from the pier, you'll travel through the lovely cities of Tauranga and Bethlehem on your way to visit a local Ngati Ranginui Maori Marae. Arriving at this intimate Maori village, you'll be greeted by a local Maori guide and taken on a cultural journey into the heritage of the Maoris and early New Zealand settlers on this unique and fascinating tour.

Well known for their hospitality, the tangata whenua, local people, will make you feel at home as they graciously show you around and give you a wealth of information about traditional and contemporary Maori life. During the course of your memorable visit, you'll have an opportunity to view craft-making and cooking and to experience the Maori's oral tradition of storytelling. Before leaving the village, your hosts will treat you to a refreshing tea.

Continuing on, your tour next makes its way to the Minden Lookout. From this excellent vantage point, you'll have stunning views over the eastern Bay of Plenty. During favorable conditions, you can even see the plumes of whispy smoke and steam arising from volcanic White Island to the east.

Before returning to the ship via the picturesque Mount Maunganui Peninsula, your coach will journey to Tauranga and past Gate Pa, site of a renowned battle between valiant Maori and British forces, as well as passing through Barke's Corner and Maungatapu.

Hobbiton Movie Set

Tour Code: TAU-007
Tour Length: Half-Day (Approximately 5 hours)
Tour Effort: Moderate

Tour the movie set where much of the blockbuster “Lord of the Rings” trilogy was filmed and visit many of the famed landmarks that appeared in the movies and books.

Departing from the pier, you will drive inland towards Matamata, taking in the bucolic scenery of the emerald-green Waikato region along the way. The land is exceptionally fertile and much of it is devoted to private farms.

In time, you will arrive at Hobbiton, a sheep and cattle farm whose terrain was altered in the late 1990s to accommodate filming for the “Lord of the Rings” movie trilogy. Dozens of hobbit holes were created, bridges and buildings were constructed, and Barberry hedges and trees were planted. It was an enormous undertaking and at the peak of filming, 400 people worked at Hobbiton, a lush setting so unusual that it still looks like a fantasyland.

While touring the movie set, you will visit the thatched-roof mill, double-arched bridge, Party Tree, and Green Dragon Inn, all of which are well-known to fans of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy novels and the movies based on them. You might also have your photo taken at the entrance of one of the holes where the merry yet shy Hobbits lived.

Afterwards, you will relax over a cup of tea before driving back to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 3-hours of easy to moderate walking/standing over mostly flat surfaces. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach and have an able-bodied companion to assist them. Those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; a bottle of water from the ship; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

Maori Culture Highlights

Tour Code: TAU-006
Tour Length: Half-Day (Approximately 4 hours)
Tour Effort: Moderate

Experience traditional Maori life in the nearby village of Paparoa Marae, where you will listen to storytellers, watch crafts being made by hand, and enjoy a cultural performance.

After departing from the pier with a local Maori guide, you will drive toward the tribal village of Paparoa Marae. Following a traditional welcome, you will be graciously shown around the village, which steadfastly embraces its heritage. Many of the buildings are adorned with intricate totem-like figures, while others are constructed with traditional materials. The village’s authentic meetinghouse or “marae” is one of the more sacred buildings, and Maori storytellers often gather here to regale visitors with ancient legends.

You will also have the opportunity to watch the villagers create handmade crafts, including items carved from indigenous totara trees. Carving is especially significant to the Maori as they knew nothing of writing until the 19th century and have always expressed themselves and honored their culture through carved works of art.

Before leaving, you’ll enjoy a tea break, after which you will drive to nearby Minden Lookout, if the weather permits. From this vantage point here, you will enjoy a stunning view of the Bay of Plenty and perhaps even see steam rising off the active volcanic on White Island in the distance. Afterwards, you will return to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 2-hours of easy walking/standing over mostly flat surfaces. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach and have an able-bodied companion to assist them. Those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland

Tour Code: TAU-004
Tour Length: Full-Day (Approximately 9 hours)
Tour Effort: Moderate

A scenic drive through the kiwifruit orchards of Te Puke begins your tour as you travel to Rotorua. Originally established as a spa town before the turn of the century, Rotorua today remains a thriving center of thermal activity and traditional Maori culture.

Your first stop is at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland. Wai-O-Tapu translates to Sacred Waters and a visit here makes it clear how the name came to be. Upon arrival at this award-winning attraction, you will be taken on a guided tour of the wide range of features found at the site. These include geysers, mud pools, mineral traces, colorful hot and cold pools and steaming volcanic lakes. One of the more famous attractions at the Reserve is the pristine Champagne Pool. Marvel at the incredible palette of vibrant hues displayed in the pools, lakes and craters, and enjoy the melodic sounds of birds singing in the native forest.

Reboard your motorcoach for a brief 30 minute drive to Lake Rotorua. At the Rotorua lakefront you may see a variety of water fowl including ducks and graceful black swans as well as several local landmarks. Board the Lakeland Queen for a delicious buffet lunch cruise. The Lakeland Queen is a locally built, shallow draft, stern driven vessel - similar to a Mississippi River Boat and ideal for Lake Rotorua's shallow waters. During your lake cruise, enjoy a unique performance from a Maori cultural group.

Following lunch, you'll travel to Rainbow Springs for a guided tour. This marvelous park is set in a natural environment of beautiful native bush, trees, plants and flowers, with tranquil crystal clear waters that flow from subterranean springs. In addition to being home to an impressive collection of Rainbow trout, the Park also houses a vast array of native birds, including the kiwi, New Zealand's national bird. Just one of the many fascinating features of the Park is the Tuatara - New Zealand's living dinosaur. Dating back to the early Triassic period, the Tuatara has survived for over 100 million years, possible only because New Zealand became separated from other land masses and the Tuatara had no natural predators. Regrettably, rats were introduced to New Zealand and these rodents have served to devastate the Tuatara population, making them an endangered species. In addition to the fine displays of nature, Rainbow Springs also serves to preserve New Zealand's national heritage.

Afterwards, you’ll travel back to the pier.
