Rotorua, New Zealand

A Rotorua Maori Experience & Thermal Reserve

Tour Code: TAU-001
Tour Length: Half-Day (Approximately 8 3/4 hours)
Tour Effort: Moderate

Explore a thriving center of breathtaking thermal activity and traditional Maori culture during this scenic, full-day visit to the historic spa town of Rotorua.

Depart the pier for the drive south from the early-1900s town of Tauranga to Te Puke, the world's largest kiwifruit growing region. Upon arrival in Rotorua, a visit will be made to the Agrodome to watch the country's best-trained champion rams parade on stage, and a sheep-shearing demonstration. The highly-trained sheep dogs will finish the show with a display of sheep mustering.

Drive past the Rotorua lakefront where you may see a variety of waterfowl, including ducks and graceful black swans as well as several local landmarks before arriving at one of Rotorua leading hotels for a buffet-style lunch consisting of hot and cold dishes, several salads and a dessert tray. Your meal will be accompanied by a rousing Maori concert featuring the action songs and dances of the Maori people.

After lunch, you will visit the New Zealand Arts and Crafts Institute where young Maori apprentices learn the ancient crafts of woodcarving and flax weaving.

Your tour will conclude with a walk through the Te Puia Thermal Reserve. Here, you will witness vivid images of the earth's molten core as your Maori guide escorts you past steam hissing from the ground, bubbling mud pools and geysers shooting columns of scalding water skyward. A strong sulfur smell, a product of the intense thermal activity, will fill the air. Remember to bring your cameras on this exciting geothermal experience.

Following your tour, you will re-board your coach for a 90-minute return drive to the pier and the ship.

Please note: Comfortable walking shoes are recommended and the itinerary may be reversed. This tour does not operate with a separate guide, but rather with a driver/guide.

Rotorua, New Zealand

Culinary Discovery Tour: Maori "kai" Cooking Demo & Kiwi Fruit

Tour Code: TAU-1CT
Tour Length: Full-Day (Approximately 6 1/2 hours)
Tour Effort: Moderate

Accompanied by our Bon Appétit Culinary Center Chef, you'll tour a flourishing kiwi orchard, while enjoying its fruit in various products, and then visit a bubbling geothermal pool, in which your traditional lunch will be cooked Maori-style.

Depart from the pier with our Bon Appétit Culinary Center Chef and drive south following the Bay of Plenty a unique pocket of land where kiwifruit, the world's healthiest fruit, grows better than anywhere else on earth. Your destination is Kiwi 360, a horticulture theme park that revolves around the kiwi fruit. Although kiwi is synonymous with New Zealand, the fruit is indigenous to China. In 1904, the first seeds were imported; spurring the growth of what has become a major commercial enterprise. While touring Kiwi 360, you'll learn all about this vitamin-rich, high-fiber fruit, which is exported to more than 60 countries worldwide. Nearly 90% of New Zealand's crop grows in this part of the country, and the versatile fruit is used in everything from beauty products to beverages to condiments. Before leaving, you'll be treated to a morning tea which features chilled kiwi juice, freshly baked scones with kiwi jam and fresh whipped cream with slices of green and gold kiwifruit. You'll also have a chance to browse the onsite souvenir shop.

Rejoining your coach, you'll travel inland past the many lakes of Rotorua to Whakarewarewa, a geothermal valley created more than 40,000 years ago. Filled with hot springs, bubbling pools and gushing geysers, this wild landscape has been inhabited by the Maori since the early 14th century. Interestingly, the heat from these natural hot springs has long been used for cooking "kai," the Maori word for food.

Upon arrival, you'll join your local guide for a walk through the valley down into a private area that overlooks your own hot pool. Maori have been using the hot geothermal water for cooking for over 650 years. Your lunch will be prepared in the traditional way by placing it in a woven bag which is then lowered into the pool where it will cook naturally in the hot water. As your food cooks, you will prepare tasty dips with the chef that will include traditional Maori native herb alternatives. Later, as you dine on your tasty lunch, your guide will explain the history of Maori occupation in the region, bringing alive Maori stories and tales while interweaving the importance that location played on the choice and availability of food to the indigenous people.

Following your meal, you'll re-board your coach for the leisurely ninety minute drive back to the pier in Tauranga.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 2 hours of moderate walking/standing. There will be some steps at Kiwi 360 and a 1/2 mile of pathways at Whakarewarewa to negotiate. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and not considered suitable for those with mobility concerns. Weather appropriate clothing that should include a light water-proof jacket; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Guests must be at least 18 years of age in order to be served any alcoholic beverages.

Rotorua, New Zealand

Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland

Tour Code: TAU-004
Tour Length: Full-Day (Approximately 9 hours)
Tour Effort: Moderate

A scenic drive through the kiwifruit orchards of Te Puke begins your tour as you travel to Rotorua. Originally established as a spa town before the turn of the century, Rotorua today remains a thriving center of thermal activity and traditional Maori culture.

Your first stop is at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland. Wai-O-Tapu translates to Sacred Waters and a visit here makes it clear how the name came to be. Upon arrival at this award-winning attraction, you will be taken on a guided tour of the wide range of features found at the site. These include geysers, mud pools, mineral traces, colorful hot and cold pools and steaming volcanic lakes. Some of the more famous attractions at the Reserve include the pristine Champagne Pool and the Lady Knox Geyser. Marvel at the incredible palette of vibrant hues displayed in the pools, lakes and craters, and enjoy the melodic sounds of birds singing in the native forest.

Leaving the unspoiled beauty of the Reserve behind, you'll next make your way back to Rotorua and the Skyline Gondola terminal. Here, you'll embark one of the aerial gondolas for an awesome ride up the side of Mount Ngongotaha, enjoying panoramic vistas of Lake Rotorua, the city and surrounding areas. Arriving at the top of the mountain, the Skyline Restaurant, with its unparalleled views, is where you'll be treated to a delicious buffet lunch. During lunch, a local Maori Kapa Haka group will entertain you by performing many traditional action songs, including the poi where the action is enhanced by the use of flaxen balls on strings - the item from which the song takes its name, and the haka, a challenging dance which is accompanied by a chant.

Following lunch, you'll travel back down the mountain for a guided tour of Rainbow Springs. This marvelous park is set in a natural environment of beautiful native bush, trees, plants and flowers, with tranquil crystal clear waters that flow from subterranean springs. In addition to being home to an impressive collection of Rainbow trout, the Park also houses a vast array of native birds, including the kiwi, New Zealand's national bird. Just one of the many fascinating features of the Park is the Tuatara - New Zealand's living dinosaur. Dating back to the early Triassic period, the Tuatara has survived for over 100 million years, possible only because New Zealand became separated from other land masses and the Tuatara had no natural predators. Regrettably, rats were introduced to New Zealand and these rodents have served to devastate the Tuatara population, making them an endangered species. In addition to the fine displays of nature, Rainbow Springs also serves to preserve New Zealand's national heritage.

Your return journey to the ship will consist of a drive past the Rotorua lakefront where you may see a variety of water fowl including ducks and graceful black swans as well as several local landmarks, before retracing your route back to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes significant walking and/or standing and may not be suitable for wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Comfortable flat walking shoes and caps are recommended. The order of the sites visited may be reversed. This tour does not operate with a separate guide, but rather with a driver/guide.
