Despite being small, Lanzarote is rich in museums, and you'll visit three of them that wonderfully depict the island's past and present, and are devoted to subjects ranging from cactus to 19th-century farm life.

It's a drive inland from the pier to the César Manrique Museum located in the village of Tahiche. Contained within the former house of Lanzarote's most celebrated artist, the modern museum exemplifies Manrique's vision of architecture being in harmony with the natural environment. It's a breathtaking setting atop an old lava field. When the lava cooled, it left behind large bubbles in which Manrique lived and worked. His paintings, as well as pieces by other Spanish masters such as Picasso and Miró can be found on display throughout the property.

Continuing on, you'll next visit the Cactus Museum, another Manrique creation. The museum sits on an old quarry of volcanic ash where more than 10,000 cacti and succulents from America, Madagascar and the Canary Islands are now displayed in a spectacular stone-built enclosure that is reminiscent of an ancient Roman amphitheater. Inside, there's a restored mill, and the grounds are punctuated with serene pools and unique metal sculptures.

Rounding out this museum tour, you'll explore El Patio, a traditional 1840 farm, outbuildings and flourmill that have been lovingly preserved and furnished with period pieces and agricultural implements. Chickens, goats and even camels are still raised here; and grains and fruit are cultivated in the fields, using traditional methods. Think of El Patio as a snapshot of a former era, an ethnographic museum where Lanzarote's culture is proudly exhibited.

Following your visit at El Patio, you'll rejoin your coach and return to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 2 1/2 hours of easy to moderate walking that includes some uneven ground and gravel surfaces. Additionally, there are steps to negotiate at the César Manrique Museum. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach and have an able-bodied companion to assist them. Those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather-appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. For Insignia's call on April 2, 2012, this tour will run with slightly shortened times at the stops to accommodate the time in port.
