Discover how deeply sugar, known as the "sweet gold," influenced the history of Motril by touring a sugar museum, a former sugar factory and a rum distillery.
From the pier, it's a short transfer to the Museo Preindustrial del Azúcarm, better known as the Sugar Museum. Upon arrival, you will enjoy a guided tour and learn how sugar has shaped the culture of southern Spain. The region's microclimate is ideal for growing sugar cane, which over the centuries brought great wealth to the Spaniards. It was such an important crop that Christopher Columbus carried sugar cane plants from southern Spain to the New World on his second voyage. Later, sugar processed from as far away as Asia made its way to Motril, where it was then exported to the Americas.
The development of the city of Motril is inextricably intertwined with the sugar industry, and nowhere is this more evident than at the museum, which actually sits on the site of a 16th-century sugar mill. Inside, you'll find exhibits that demonstrate the painstaking process of refining sugar long before more modern technology was developed. Historical records show that sugar was first produced around Motril as far back as the 10th century.
Next, it's a brief walk from the museum to a sugar factory that operated until 1984. Following an exterior visit here, you'll embark on a quick walking tour of Motril before rejoining your coach and driving to the Bodegas Ron Montero. Founded nearly 50 years ago, this family-owned rum distillery still produces the liquor by traditional means, aging it in oak barrels. During your visit, you'll have the opportunity to sample a small glass of the distillery's distinctly flavored rum before driving back to the pier.
Please note: This tour includes approximately 2 1/2 hours of easy to moderate walking/standing. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach and have an able-bodied companion to assist them. Those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Guests must be at least 21 years of age to participate in the rum tasting. The order of the sites viewed or visited may vary.
