POST-THE ROOTS OF ARAGON AND CATALONIA 2019-20

This program ends in Madrid; therefore departure flights must be booked out of the Madrid International Airport (MAD).

Explore the ancient history and culture in the Aragon and Catalonia regions through architectural treasures that include a UNESCO World Heritage monastery, a church that is now a pilgrimage site and the very best of Madrid.

Day 1:

After disembarking in Barcelona, you will meet the tour guide for a leisurely drive to the Poblet Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site that was founded around 1150. While meandering through the monastery, you will learn how the monks lived through various time periods, starting with the Middle Ages.

For a deeper look into medieval life, you will then drive to nearby Montblanc, a walled city with a fascinating Old Town. Following free time and a traditional lunch, you will continue on to the ancient city of Zaragoza, enjoying the changing landscape along the way.

Following check in at the hotel in Zaragoza, the remainder of the day will be at leisure with dinner on your own.

Day 2:

After breakfast at the hotel, you will begin a city tour, focusing on the old quarter. One of the highlights will be El Pilar, a cathedral that has become a revered pilgrimage site. It overlooks the Ebro River, where according to legend the Virgin Mary gave Saint James a pillar made of jasper and instructed him to build a church. The existing cathedral was designed in 1681 and constructed over a number of smaller churches, including the chapel that Saint James built.

Later, on the way to Madrid, you will stop at the ancient town of Medinaceli. Founded by Romans on a hilltop, it features ruins from the 2nd and 3rd centuries, including the only three-gate Roman arch in Spain. Medinaceli especially thrived during the Middle Ages because of its location on the border between the Arab and Christian kingdoms.

Following lunch at a restaurant in Medinaceli, you will drive on to Madrid and check into the Melia Madrid Princesa hotel. The remainder of the day will be at your leisure and dinner will be on your own.

Day 3:

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will begin a lengthy tour of Madrid, taking in its architectural gems and monuments. Upon arriving at the grand Plaza Mayor, you will proceed on foot, admiring the ornate municipal and cultural building La Casa de la Panaderia and the many shops under the porticos.

After about four hours of touring, you may return to the hotel or remain in town and return on your own. The remainder of the day will be at leisure with lunch and dinner on your own.

Day 4:

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will transfer to the airport based on your flight time. If you have a later flight, you may store your luggage at the hotel under you depart for the airport.
