Hong Kong, China

PRE: XIAN & TERRA COTTA WARRIORS FROM HKG

Fly to Xi’an, the energetic capital of the Shaanxi Province, and tour its most spectacular attractions, including the Terracotta Warriors Museum, Wild Goose Pagoda, Muslim Quarter, Grand Mosque and Tang Dynasty Theatre.

Special Note: Any guests travelling with Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC) or CPAP breathing machines should read further below for airline stipulations with regards to bringing this equipment on tour.

Day 1

After arriving at the Hong Kong International Airport and passing through baggage claim and Customs, you will be transferred to the Kowloon Shangri La (or similar hotel). The remainder of the day is at your leisure to relax, settle in and explore wherever you please. Meals are on your own.

Day 2

Following breakfast at the hotel and check out, you will be transferred to the airport for a flight to Xi’an (direct flights are not guaranteed.) Upon arriving in Xi’an and passing through immigration, Customs and baggage claim, you will continue to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. One of China’s most revered pagodas, it was built in 652 A.D. to house the sutras and figurines of Buddha that a Chinese monk brought to Xi’an. The building was eventually expanded to ten stories, although only seven stories remain, as the others were damaged in various wars. Nevertheless, the pagoda is recognized as a symbol of Xi’an.

In the early evening, you will be transferred to nearby Defachang, a popular restaurant known for its dumplings. Carefully hand-prepared, the dumplings are available in dozens of different shapes and colors and filled with a variety of local ingredients. You can expect the meal to be wonderfully traditional. After dinner, you will drive back to the hotel to check in and spend the evening.

Day 3

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will drive to the Terracotta Warriors Museum, a repository for thousands of clay soldiers that were buried with China’s first emperor to accompany him in his eternal rest. Considered one of the world’s greatest archaeological treasures, the 7,000 life-size terracotta warriors and horses were buried for centuries until excavated in 1974.

The warriors are grouped in battle order, rank by rank, some mounted on horse-drawn chariots and others in infantry groups armed with spears, swords and crossbows. Each figure was individually created with unique characteristics.

Following the tour and a traditional Chinese lunch at a nearby restaurant, you will visit the Shaanxi History Museum. Inside, seemingly countless exhibits depict the history of China from prehistoric times to the mid-19th century. It offers an enlightening overview of the country, with a particular emphasis on the Shaanxi Province.

Return to the hotel to freshen up before driving to the Tang Dynasty Theatre for dinner and a cultural performance. The costumed show features ancient music, poetry, singing and dance, some of which were developed as parts of ritual prayers for a good harvest. Following the lively performance, you will return to the hotel to spend the evening.

Day 4

After breakfast at the hotel and check out you will explore the Muslim Quarter and its Grand Mosque. Muslims have lived in the quarter for more than 1,000 years ago, beginning with the merchants from Arabic countries that settled at this terminus of the Silk Road. The Grand Mosque is particularly fascinating, as it reflects traditional Chinese and Muslim styles.

Then, it’s on to a traditional hot pot restaurant for lunch, before driving to the airport for the flight back to Hong Kong. Upon arriving in Hong Kong, you will be transferred to the Kowloon Shangri La (or similar hotel).

Day 5

Following breakfast and check out from the hotel, you will be transferred to the cruise ship for embarkation.

PRE: THE JEWELS OF HONG KONG

Worlds collide on this tour of Hong Kong. From Aberdeen, a village on the water, to the soaring heights of Victoria Peak, experience Hong Kong from every vantage point. Gain a deeper understanding of Hong Kong’s culture and traditions by visiting key attractions such as Stanley Market and the Western District, riding a tram to Victoria Peak and cruising through a fishing village by sampan.

Day 1

After arriving at the Hong Kong International Airport and going through the luggage claim and Customs, you will be met at Arrival Hall B and transferred to the Kowloon Shangri La Hotel, where you will spend the evening.

Although every effort will be made to have rooms ready before check-in at 2:00pm, this cannot be guaranteed. If you have an early arrival, you may wish to book an extra night so that your room will be available upon arrival.

The remainder of the day will be at your leisure and meals will be on your own. Feel free to simply settle in and relax or you might explore areas of Hong Kong not on the itinerary.

Day 2

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will drive to Hong Kong Island. For the ultimate view of the surroundings, you will ride the tram up to Victoria Peak. The world’s steepest funicular railway, the Peak Tram opened in 1888 and has been providing spectacular panoramas ever since. As you ascend, you may notice that the steep slope causes an optical illusion in which the skyscrapers seem to be standing at impossible angles.

After pausing for photos at the peak, you will drive on to Aberdeen fishing village and board a sampan boat. While on the water, you can expect to see fishing boats, Chinese junks and villagers doing chores. The experience offers a candid look into daily life, as does your next stop—a tour of a gem factory where you will learn how the craftsmen process the stones for sale or to be set into jewelry.

Then following lunch, it’s on to vibrant Stanley Market, a highly popular shopping destination for merchandise such as silk garments, Chinese costume jewelry and art. As an alternative in Stanley, you might explore Tin Hau Temple, which once stood at the edge of the sea, and the Murray House, an early 19th-century building that was moved from its original site to the seaside.

Your next destination will be the Central district before embarking on a short cruise on the renowned Victoria Harbor.

Following your cruise, you will return to the hotel and spend the evening as you please.

Day 3

After breakfast at the hotel, you will depart for Tung Chung, a city on Lantau, Hong Kong’s largest island. The landscape is lush and mountainous, and you will enjoy a wonderful view of it while riding a cable car to Ngong Ping village.

Nearby, you will find Po Lin Monastery. Once a rather remote monastery, it gained prominence in 1993, when a Big Buddha statue was erected here. More than 100 feet high, it attracts pilgrims from all over Asia. Be sure to have your camera ready for photos of the iconic Buddha.

After a vegetarian lunch at the monastery, you will explore Ngong Ping village on your own. The large Buddha here is also impressive, as is the teahouse with its intricate architectural carvings and curved roof.

In time, you will return to Tung Chung and on to your hotel to enjoy the remainder of the day and evening on your own.

Day 4

Following breakfast and check out from the hotel, you will be transferred to the cruise ship for embarkation.

OVERLAND - ALL AROUND CHINA

Discover the joys of downtown Hong Kong and Shanghai and experience life in lesser-known towns by cruising the Li River in a bamboo raft, exploring a karst cave and watching a stunning nighttime musical performance.

Special Note: Any guests travelling with Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC) or CPAP breathing machines should read further below for airline stipulations with regards to bringing this equipment on tour.

DAY 1 – April 4, 2025

After disembarking the ship in Hong Kong, you will transfer to the Central Tram Station and ride the funicular to the top of Victoria Peak. The views of the harbor and Southern Island from the summit are spectacular.

Continuing on, you will next visit the Western District, an area known for its antique shops and dried seafood market.

Lunch follows, after which you will cross Victoria Harbor and travel into urban Kowloon on the mainland. There you will experience the tranquility of Chi Lin Nunnery, the diverse markets along Temple Street and the fashionable Ladies’ Market in Mong Kok.

By late afternoon, you will check into the hotel and enjoy some time to freshen up before an evening cruise around Victoria Harbor. Hong Kong will be beautifully illuminated and look even more magnificent once the dramatic Symphony of Lights show begins. Expect to be awed as neon lights with changing patterns are projected up dozens of skyscrapers that line the harbor.

Dinner follows at a nearby restaurant, after which you will return to the Hotel Icon (or a similar hotel) for the evening.

DAY 2 – April 5, 2025

After breakfast at the hotel and check-out, you will fly to Guilin. During an enlightening tour of the city and surrounding area, you will visit Elephant Trunk Hill – a karst formation named for its shape – and Reed Flute Cave, an underground world so extraordinary that it is known as the Palace of Natural Arts.

You will then transfer to the resort city of Yangshuo, arriving in time for dinner and the Impression Liu Sanjie musical night show. With the Li River as a backdrop, the setting for the outdoor performance is particularly stunning. The distinguished film director Zhang Yimou produced the show, as well as the opening ceremonies of the 2008 Summer and 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

After the performance, you will check into Sugarhouse Yangshuo or a similar hotel for the evening.

DAY 3 – April 6, 2025

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will depart for the Li River, which you will cruise on a bamboo raft. In addition to the glorious scenery, you will likely see villagers doing laundry and washing dishes in the river water, just as they have for centuries. You will also watch a demonstration of trained cormorants being used to catch fish for the villagers, a practice that dates back more than a thousand years.

After stopping at an island in the river for lunch, you will continue on to Moon Mountain, which is named for the moon-shaped hole in one of its peaks, and the Big Banyan Tree, a massive specimen that is said to be nearly 1,400 years old.

Back in Yangshuo, you will tour the city and dine downtown before returning to the hotel for the evening.

DAY 4 – April 7, 2025

Following breakfast at the hotel and check out, you will transfer to the airport and fly to Shanghai. After checking into the Hyatt on The Bund (or a similar hotel) in Shanghai, you will tour the waterfront area known as The Bund.

The historian guide will describe the significance of the highlights, which include the first all-steel bridge in China.

While strolling across the bridge and along The Bund, you will hear about Shanghai’s colonial past and how the city grew to such prominence.

After dinner at a downtown restaurant, you will return to the hotel for the evening.

DAY 5 – April 8, 2025

Following breakfast at the hotel and check out, you will head for the Urban Planning Exhibition Center, a museum of sorts that shows Shanghai’s urban development from ancient times to the present. You can expect to see scale models of the entire downtown and landmarks such as Yuyuan Garden. You may even view Shanghai’s vision for the future through virtual-reality technology.

You will also have time to explore the Former French Concession, a residential neighborhood of historical buildings and tree-lined streets. The guide will elaborate on the area’s history, especially the time period when the French government administered there. As you stroll along Wukang Road, you will eventually come to the Wukang Mansion, the oldest veranda-style building in Shanghai. It is wedge-shaped, much like the famed Flatiron Building in New York City.

Around mid-day, you will transfer to the port to re-embark the cruise ship.

Become immersed in Chinese traditions during a tea ceremony, while browsing historical neighborhoods and at an herbal medicine pharmacy, and as a wonderful contrast ride a high-speed train and cruise Hong Kong harbor.

Following breakfast at the hotel and check out, you will fly to Hangzhou. Upon arriving, you will transfer to a restaurant for a traditional lunch and then proceed to LIngyin Temple. It is one of the oldest and most significant Buddhist temples in China and contains dozens of halls that focus on different aspects of Buddhism. They include the Hall of Master Ji Gong, a 13th-century monk, and the Hall of Heavenly Kings, which graces the temple’s formal entrance.

Later in the afternoon, you will enjoy a snack and tea lakeside before cruising West Lake. As night falls and shadows are cast on the waterfront temples, pagodas and islands, the setting will become even more beautiful.

Afterwards, you will check into the Grand Hyatt Hangzhou or a similar hotel, where you will dine and spend the evening.

DAY 3 – April 6, 2025

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will travel to the Dragon Well tea plantation for a hands-on experience of tea picking and to learn how to make Dragon Well Tea. During a private tea ceremony, you will be served this variety of green tea, which typically exudes a chestnut and orchid fragrance.

Later, you will proceed to Hu Qingyu Tang, a traditional pharmacy and museum where you will discover some of the basics of Chinese medicine. If you wish, one of the doctors will take your pulse and offer advice about how to live more healthily.

In the evening, you will watch the Impression West Lake, a spectacle of music, light and dance staged on the lake. The distinguished film director Zhang Yimou produced the show, as well as the opening ceremonies of the 2008 Summer and 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

Afterwards, you will return to the hotel for the evening.

POST - CHENGDU AND ITS PANDAS 2022

Fly to the ancient city of Chengdu to interact with panda bears and feed them bamboo, an enlightening prelude to delving even deeper into the Sichuan province by browsing the enigmatic artifacts in the Sanxingdui Museum.

Day 1

After disembarking in Hong Kong, proceed to the baggage reclaim area to identify your baggage.

Any excess luggage you will not take to Chengdu will be separated and taken to your hotel in Hong Kong for storage. You will be reunited with it on Day 3. Please make sure to pack accordingly before disembarking the ship and don’t forget to bring any valuables, medications and documents with you.

Transfer to the Hong Kong airport for the flight to Chengdu where upon arrival, you will be met and taken to the Shangri-la Hotel Chengdu for check in and time to settle in and refresh.

Later in the afternoon, you will travel to the Jinli Cultural Street, a typically bustling network of alleyways lined with handicrafts shops and traditional restaurants. Few places offer such an array of merchandise and browsing the stores with the aroma of freshly cooked food wafting through the air will be quite the experience.

Dinner will be served back at the hotel, where you will spend a relaxing evening.

Day 2

After breakfast at the hotel, you will drive to Dujiangyan Panda Habitat, a prime spot to interact with pandas, learn about their behavior and discover firsthand why these endangered bears are so lovable.

Upon reaching the panda enclosure in a golf cart, you will observe the animals up close. The panda keeper will explain how to care for them, as that will soon be your shared responsibility. Feel free to ask questions.

During the interactive experience that follows, you will feed the pandas bamboo, which makes up their entire diet in the wild. Bamboo is low in nutrition, and the pandas must eat voraciously to maintain their energy, even though they have a low metabolism. The distinctive roundness of their faces is in part a result of their powerful jaw muscles.

During the break that follows, you will be served lunch and then watch a documentary film on pandas. By the time you depart the Dujiangyan Panda Base, you will have a much deeper understanding of these beloved animal ambassadors.

After returning to the hotel to freshen up, you will depart for a Sichuan hot pot dinner in which the ingredients are simmered in soup stock at the dining table. A Sichuan opera show follows, during which the performers will demonstrate the art of face-changing by switching multiple masks at lightning speed.

In time, you will return to the hotel for the evening.

Day 3

After breakfast at the hotel and check out, you will depart for the Sanxingdui Museum, a collection of pieces excavated from the Three-Star Piles archaeological site. The artifacts include magnificent bronze sculptures, jade ware and pottery from the beginning of the ancient Shu society that lived in the area perhaps 4,800 years ago. As no texts were unearthed and no other cultures mention Sanxingdui, the discoveries remain somewhat enigmatic.

After browsing the museum, you will proceed to the airport for the flight back to Hong Kong. Lunch will be served at the airport before departure.

Once you arrive in Hong Kong, you will reclaim your luggage, clear Customs and meet the representative at Arrival Hall B. From there, you will transfer to the Kowloon Shangri-la Hotel, where you will spend the evening. You will also be reunited with your excess luggage that was stored at the hotel on Day 1.

POST: XIAN & TERRA COTTA WARRIORS FROM HKG

Fly to Xi’an, the energetic capital of the Shaanxi Province, and tour its most spectacular attractions, including the Terracotta Warriors Museum, Wild Goose Pagoda, Muslim Quarter, Grand Mosque and Tang Dynasty Theatre.

Day 1

Disembark the ship and transfer to the airport for your flight to Xi’an (direct flights are not guaranteed.) Upon arrival you will proceed to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda.

After dinner, you will drive back to the hotel to spend the evening.

Special Note: Any guests travelling with Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC) or CPAP breathing machines should read further below for airline stipulations with regards to bringing this equipment on tour.

Day 2

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will drive to the Terracotta Warriors Museum, a repository for thousands of clay soldiers that were buried with China’s first emperor to accompany him in his eternal rest. Considered one of the world’s greatest archaeological treasures, the 7,000 life-size terracotta warriors and horses were buried for centuries until excavated in 1974.

The warriors are grouped in battle order, rank by rank, some mounted on horse-drawn chariots and others in infantry groups armed with spears, swords and crossbows. Each figure was individually created with unique characteristics.

Following the tour and a traditional Chinese lunch at a nearby restaurant, you will explore the Muslim Quarter and its Grand Mosque. Muslims have lived in the quarter for more than 1,000 years ago, beginning with the merchants from Arabic countries that settled at this terminus of the Silk Road. The Grand Mosque is particularly fascinating, as it reflects traditional Chinese and Muslim styles.

After visiting the mosque, you will return to the hotel to freshen up before driving to the Tang Dynasty Theatre for dinner and a cultural performance. The costumed show features ancient music, poetry, singing and dance, some of which were developed as parts of ritual prayers for a good harvest. Following the lively performance, you will return to the hotel to spend the evening.

Day 3

After breakfast at the hotel and check out, you will visit the Shaanxi History Museum. Inside, seemingly countless exhibits depict the history of China from prehistoric times to the mid-19th century. It offers an enlightening overview of the country, with a particular emphasis on the Shaanxi Province.

Then, it’s on to a traditional hot pot restaurant for lunch, before driving to the airport for the flight back to Hong Kong. Upon arriving in Hong Kong, you will be transferred to your hotel for the evening. Dinner is on your own.

POST: THE JEWELS OF HONG KONG

Worlds collide on this tour of Hong Kong. From Aberdeen, a village on the water, to the soaring heights of Victoria Peak, experience Hong Kong from every vantage point. Gain a deeper understanding of Hong Kong’s culture and traditions by visiting key attractions such as Stanley Market and the Western District, riding a tram to Victoria Peak and cruising through a fishing village by sampan.

Day 1

Following disembarkation from the ship, you will drive to Hong Kong Island.

Day 2

Day 3

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel and then the remainder of the day will be at your leisure. Feel free to simply relax or contact the Hospitality desk staff for suggestions on how to spend your day in Hong Kong.

Lunch and dinner are on your own today.

Day 4

12:00pm is the official check out time. You will be transferred to the Hong Kong International Airport per the flight details received. Should you have a late flight, luggage storage is available at the hotel or you may wish to book an extra night so that you can keep the room until your transfer.
