Durban, South Africa

OVERLAND - PHINDA MOUNTAIN LODGE (DUR-RIC) 2020

Phinda Private Game Reserve encompasses an impressive 56,800 acres of prime wilderness in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Showcasing one of the continent's finest game-viewing experiences, Phinda features Africa's wildlife at its best. Often described as the "Seven Worlds of Wonder," with its seven distinct habitats, Phinda is home to an abundance of wildlife from the largest lion to the smallest antelope. This fully inclusive program promises to be an unforgettable experience.

DAY 1:

Depart Durban and drive approximately 4.5 hours to the Phinda Private Game Reserve, a protected wildlife area that sprawls across over 43,000 beautiful acres of South Africa. Because of its size, the preserve boasts seven distinct habitats, including woodland, grassland, wetland and mountain ranges.

Upon arriving at the Phinda Mountain Lodge, you will enjoy a welcome drink. Afterwards, you will have time to settle into your accommodations before afternoon tea and then departing on an afternoon game drive.

Late afternoon is one of the prime times to view wildlife, as it’s cooler and the animals are more active. While there is no telling what you will observe, the reserve is home to countless animals, including the Big Five: elephant, lion, leopard, rhinoceros and Cape buffalo. Herds of elephants are often seen meandering through the fever tree forests, while white rhinoceroses are usually found grazing on the grassland.

Following the game drive, sundowners and light snacks will be served at a clearing in the bush, where you might see nocturnal wildlife. In time, you will return to the Phinda Mountain Lodge for dinner and to spend the evening. The lodge offers spectacular views of the mountain range and surrounding bushveld, so it’s quite the setting.

DAY 2:

The day begins with an early-morning wakeup call, followed by tea, coffee and biscuits in the lounge. This too is an ideal time for wildlife viewing. As before, you will head into the bush in an open-topped 4x4 vehicle, accompanied by knowledgeable rangers and trackers who are skilled at pointing out the various animals.

You may catch sight of a shy red duiker grazing on fallen leaves and fruit. The elegant nyala antelope is seen even more frequently, as Phinda boasts one of the highest densities of the species. The male nyala has a dark brown coat, yellow legs and shaggy mane, making it particularly spectacular. The female nyala features a less flashy, but no less beautiful chestnut coat. Of course, the Big Five always command attention and they are abundant.

Following your game drive, you will return to the lodge for breakfast. Then, after check out, you will transfer to Richards Bay to re-join your ship. Travelling time is approximately 2 hours.

This fully inclusive program promises to be an unforgettable experience.

DAY 1 – January 25th, 2019

Depart Durban and drive approximately 4.5 hours to the Phinda Private Game Reserve, a protected wildlife area that sprawls across nearly 57,000 beautiful acres of South Africa.

Head into the bush on several game drives, looking for iconic African animals such as lions and elephants in Kruger National Park, where you will stay in the luxurious Jock Safari Lodge. This luxurious private lodge with 6, 000 hectares of natural landscape offers guests one of the best Big 5 game viewing experiences in South Africa with its exclusive riverbed traversing rights.

Special Note: Any guests travelling with Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC) or CPAP breathing machines should read further below for airline stipulations with regards to bringing this equipment on tour.

DAY 1: February 8, 2020

After the flight from Durban to Nelspruit, you will be met by another English-speaking guide and transferred to Jock Safari Lodge, which is located within Kruger National Park. Carefully screened by lush trees and reed walls, the 12 individual thatched rooms at Jock Safari Lodge impart a sense of solitude and harmony with the landscape.

The largest game reserve in South Africa, Kruger National Park was established in 1898 to protect the wildlife of the South African lowveld. This is the land of baobabs, fever trees, knob thorns, marula and mopane trees, and home to the legendary Big Five—buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion and rhino.

It is also inhabited by the Little Five—buffalo weaver, elephant shrew, leopard tortoise, ant lion and rhino beetle, and the birding Big Six—ground hornbill, kori bustard, lappet-faced vulture, martial eagle, Pel’s fishing owl and saddle-bill stork— and more species of mammals than any other African game reserve.

Before the turn of the century, the lure of gold brought men from all corners of the world to Southern Africa. Sir Percy Fitzpatrick, author of the animal classic “Jock of the Bushveld” was one of these men.

The adventurers passed through some of Africa’s most scenic untamed wilderness, including the area where Jock Safari Lodge is located. Its southern boundary is the old wagon route from Delgoa Bay into the gold fields of the interior. Jock Safari Lodge incorporates the romance and elegance of the colonial era and reflects the indigenous Zulu and Shangaan cultures.

Shamwari is about conserving a vanishing way of life, and has been awarded a number of International awards for its efforts in conservation coupled with tourism.

Shamwari's highly trained game rangers, with skilled service staff will ensure a memorable adventure, personalized to your needs. In keeping with its conservation policy, Shamwari has a complete wildlife research team as well as its own anti-poaching unit, ensuring an ecological balance prevails on this reclaimed piece of wilderness.

OVERLAND - JOCK SAFARI LODGE DUR-MPM 2020

During your voyage, enjoy a rare opportunity to explore the world’s most fascinating destinations in small, private groups, with knowledgeable guides to help you discover off –the-beaten- path gems. On an Overland Program, you’ll disembark the ship for one-night or more to enjoy a more authentic insider’s view, experiencing firsthand the colorful cultures, dramatic landscapes and exquisite landmarks before rejoining your ship.

DAY 1: January 14, 2020

Upon disembarkation in Durban, you will be met by an English-speaking tour guide who will accompany you on the road transfer to Durban International Airport.

After a welcome drink at the lodge, you will embark on an exciting 4-wheel-drive safari in search of game and then enjoy sundowners and snacks in the bush. Dinner follows around a roaring boma fire under the stars.

DAY 2: January 15, 2020

Hot and cold beverages will be waiting for you after your early-morning wake up call. You will then set off on a game drive that showcases the wildlife and nature of the southern region of Kruger National Park. Bounded by the Crocodile River and the Sabie River, the southern region is also host to the jagged ridge of the Lebombo Mountains along the Mozambique border and the highest point in the park, Khandzalive.

The valleys are home to trees rarely found in other parts of the park, such as the Cape chestnut, coral tree and lavender fever-berry. On the whole, there is more game purported to exist in the southern part of the park.

Following the early-morning safari, you will return to the lodge for a leisurely lunch and by late afternoon head out on another game drive. Dinner will be served on your return to the lodge.

DAY 3: January 16, 2020

This morning, you will be woken before sunrise and then meet in the reception area for hot beverages, before departing on an early-morning game drive. You will then return to the lodge for breakfast.

Next, you will be transferred by road to the port in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique. At the border post between Mozambique and South Africa, you will need to proceed to immigration for customs control.

Please note: Mozambique visas need to have been arranged prior to embarking the vessel. Obtaining visas at Komatiepoort border cannot be guaranteed.

South Africa’s seasons are the reverse of those in the northern hemisphere, midwinter is in June and midsummer in December and January. Kariega is located in the Eastern Cape where the weather is usually mild and pleasant. Summers can become quite hot (up to around 30° C) and winters can be chilly - especially at night and early mornings which can drop to about 7° C. January and February are the hottest months, while June and July tend to be the coldest.

What to bring:

During winter and autumn months we recommend warm clothes including a winter jacket and/or raincoat, as well as some cool clothes for the day, as winter days can be quite warm. During summer and spring months we recommend cool clothes as well as some warm clothes including perhaps a spring coat and/or raincoat as evenings can be quite cool. Remember to also pack comfortable walking shoes if you would like to enjoy our bush walks. Formal wear is not necessary for dinner.

You should also bring sun screen, mosquito repellent, a hat/cap and if you have your own binoculars you might like to bring those, although we do have a number of binoculars for guests to use.
