Visit one of Quebec’s most beautiful villagesHugging the banks of the Saguenay Fjord, L’Anse-Saint-Jean is a charming village with ancestral homes, a covered bridge, and breathtaking landscapes (especially in autumn). The small sandy beach is a lovely spot for a picnic of local terroir: chocolates from KAO Chocolat, and local craft beer, cheese, and charcuterie from La Chasse-Pinte boutique. Walk to the top of the $1000 Bill Vantage Point for a postcard-perfect panoramic view of the town and bridge (featured on Canada’s $1000 bill in 1954 ), rent a kayak with Fjord en Kayak, or wander around town and stop for a pastry and a coffee at Nuances de Grains.
Shop for hand-painted linens
In a small atelier on rue Victoria (a two-minute walk from the cruise terminal), À Moi de Moi sells hand-painted linen tablecloths, cushions, and tea towels featuring the scenery, wildlife, and traditional dishes (like tourtière, a meat pie, and la gourgane, a fava bean soup made with cabbage, pearl barley, and carrots) of the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region. Inspired by her grandmother, a textile artist, boutique owner Mélanie Morin went to art school in Montréal, spending several years there before relocating to Saguenay. Stop in to learn about Morin’s work, admire some of her grandmother’s textiles, and shop for some truly unique souvenirs.
Explore La Baie on an e-bike
Explore the beauty and history of La Baie on a three-hour, self-guided e-bike tour with Saguenay Guided Tours, where packages include an audio guide, phone mount, and helmet. Stops include Monument 21, honoring the 21 colonists who settled here in 1838, and the Pyramide des Ha! Ha! (Ha! Ha! means “end of path”), a red and white steel monument commemorating the 1996 Saguenay flood. Visit Marina La Baie on the opposite side of the river to see sweeping views of the town and fjord, and ride to Fromagerie Boivin, where buying squeaky-fresh cheese curds is a must. After returning your bike, walk across the street to O’Gelato et Cacao for traditional Italian gelato (the dark chocolate is superb).
